If you want an accredited, professional, leading-edge school to provide enjoyable Martial Arts training for you, your child, or your entire family...  then the Self Defense Academy is the school for you. We have different prices depending on individual, child/youth, adult, couple, or family. Please stop by and pick up a brochure or talk with Rick or Rita. We could then answer any questions for you in more detail. Our Tiny Tots Program starts as low as $60.00 per month.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?

Our philosophy is that any Martial Arts is good, because of the life skills that you learn. Some styles are designed for self-defense, where others are for competition. We feel that Wing Chun Kung Fu excels in the self-defense training because it is an all around art. It works all ranges of combat, including trapping range, kicking range, ground fighting, locks, 9-foot-long pole, and close-range knives. Wing Chung kicks are designed for self-defense in striking below the waist. This allows the practitioner to maintain better balance.

WHAT MAKES YOUR STYLE OF MARTIAL ARTS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SCHOOLS?

We teach Kung Fu styles: Wing Chun Kung Fu, Qi Gong. We are family owned and operated.

WHAT MAKES YOUR SCHOOL DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SCHOOLS?

They like the idea that we emphasize Life Skills that can be used in everyday situations. Home school parents like the exposure that their children receive working on drills that reinforce teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence, and help avoid peer pressure.

WHAT DO SOME OF THE MOMS THINK ABOUT YOUR CLASSES?

We recommend watching a class and also talking to parents who have children in the class. They are our best advertising. They would not have their children there if they were dissatisfied with our program.

CAN I WATCH A CLASS BEFORE I SIGN UP?

The Little Dragons have belt promotions that are given after sessions are completed. The Ninjas have sash promotions after they have attended required class time. We test when they qualify, not on a scheduled once-a-month testing. Testing fees are the same regardless of what level belt or sash they are testing for in the children's programs.

DO YOU USE BELTS? HOW LONG BETWEEN EACH BELT?

Two days per week is what we recommend for consistent progress. Home practice is required and encouraged.

HOW MANY CLASSES PER WEEK SHOULD I GO TO?

For the Swat, Storm, and Demo Teams the students train with Nunchuckas, Bo staff, and other weapons. At instructor levels the 9 foot pole (Look Dim Boon Kwan) and the Knives (Bot Chum Do) are taught.

WHAT TYPE OF WEAPONS DO YOU TEACH?

We feel that tournaments have both pros and cons. Wing Chun is a combat art and trains for self defense situations. We teach reality-based training. On the street there are no rules, where as tournaments have their rules: i.e. some have no striking to the face, no kicks below the waist, no excessive force, and you must pull your punches. They can build up or tear down self esteem and confidence, which defeats the purpose of training at our facility. We do not recommend it, but if a student has the interest we will support them.

WHAT IF I WANT TO GO TO TOURNAMENTS?

We have our classes divided into age groups. Our teens are with the adults in the Adult Class. This way the student gets to work with other students in their age group, and on a curriculum that is designed for their age group.

DO YOU TEACH ADULTS & KIDS IN THE SAME CLASS?

No. We emphasize Life Skills in our children's classes, and also conflict resolution. The students work on techniques that build their confidence to protect themselves.

DO YOU JUST TEACH KICKING AND PUNCHING?

Wing Chun is a soft style of martial arts - a system that redirects force by using the body's lines It is a principle oriented style of Martial Arts.

WHAT IS WING CHUN KUNG FU?

Yes, we have had many students tell us how much weight they have lost. We work on techniques in a cardio-style workout.

CAN YOU HELP ME GET IN SHAPE?

We offer classes for Tiny Tots Little Dragons - ages 3-4 years old. In this class we work on Life Skills to help the little ones focus so they will be better listeners. This will help prepare them when they move up into the other classes or when they start in day-care / elementary schools. For more information click on Tiny Tots Little Dragons.

IS MY CHILD TOO YOUNG?

Sifu Rick Frye with wife, Simo Rita Frye, opened the doors of the Self Defense Academy in February of 1996. We are family owned and operated. We have continued to enhance the kwoon (school) and have joined several Associations of Professional Martial Artists.
