We will teach them how to protect their loved ones and become more aware of their environment. We cannot of course do this alone; it takes teaming up with you. Sifu Rick Frye along with his wife, Simo Rita Frye, opened the doors of the Self Defense Academy (SDA) in February of 1996. We have continued to enhance the kwoon (school) and have joined several Associations of Professional Martial Artists. We have our classes divided into age groups. Our teens are with the adults in the Adult Class. This way the student gets to work with other students in their age group, and on a curriculum that is designed for their age group. We emphasize Life Skills in our children's classes, and also conflict resolutions. The students work on techniques that build their confidence to protect themselves. We teach Wing Chun Kung Fu for Kids and adults, Judo kor kids, Combat Jujitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) for adults. Our philosophy is that any Martial Arts is good, because of the life skills that you learn. Some styles are designed for self-defense where others are for competition. We feel that Wing Chun Kung Fu excels in the self defense training because it is an all around art. It works all ranges of combat, including trapping range, kicking range, ground fighting, locks, 9 foot long pole, and close range knives. Wing Chun kicks are designed for self defense in striking below the waist . This allows the practitioner to maintain better balance. Where the Judo & Jujitsu work great on the ground, they also teach throws, take downs, joint locks, chokes and the proper ways to fall and roll. We have different prices depending on individual, child/youth, adult, couple, or family. Please stop by and pick up a brochure or talk with Rick or Rita. If your child has a behavior problem, s/he should be in Kung Fu. They will learn to focus and be accountable for chores and kind behavior. People have a mistaken idea that Kung Fu teaches kids to beat up other kids. That is completely wrong. Children learn self-defense and treating others with kindness and respect. Your child will have fun in Kung Fu, and as a parent you can feel good about giving your child a fun experience that will help them be successful in school and throughout life. This is truly a life skill school! My kids both get wonderful physical exercise while learning self-defense, self-discipline, and respect for others. They are learning everything from being comfortable with public speaking to performing random acts of kindness to setting short and long term goals! We enrolled our son in kung fu to learn coordination, self discipline, and of course self-defense, to a lesser extent. What we have seen with the Self Defense Academy is all that we mentioned above. However what we saw with Rick Frye was that he has a gift with children. With our son we knew he needed confidence, and that is what Rick teaches our son. He doesn't get impatient and he is always encouraging, but does not baby him either. We enrolled our daughter in the academy after seeing how great Rick was with our son. She had been told to shut up on more than one occasion with the ballet studio she was enrolled in. With Rick he has been firm but gentle with our daughter and saw how to train her, without tearing her down but not letting her be out of line either. I highly recommend the Self defense Academy to anyone I talk to and have run into other parents who see what I see with Rick. I would say enroll your child for the life skills they need, coordination, self-discipline, character building, confidence etc. And it is nice to know while they receive that, the side benefit that they get with Kung Fu training might also save their life someday. My son started class very shy when interacting with other kids. Thanks to the SDA he is more sociable towards other kids. While I am pleased that my child is learning self-defense skills it is more important that he is learning skills he can use at home and at school. This class has been a tremendous help in teaching my son respect for others, self-control, concentration and better socialization skills. Sifu & the staff of the SDA are Great!
